AI Atlas

AI is a stack. A system you can use stands on a model, the model on chips, the chips on factories, power and minerals; and work, money, law and belief stand on all of it. Here are eleven layers and many landmarks. Pick one to see what it stands on and what stands on it, or open a layer to see everything recorded for it.

A line here is a document. Two landmarks are joined only when a paper, filing, rule or announcement names both. Things that merely happened in the same months sit side by side with no line.

The stack, 1986 to now

Each row is a layer, and lower layers carry upper ones. Each mark is a landmark, placed by date; colour shows the band. Below the chart you can light up what AI can do, where you would meet it, a theme or one period across every layer.

What it can do: read, see, speak, discover, play, move, act (follows each landmark's sub-lane)
Where you meet it: at home, in the office, at school, on the road, in your town and more (the curator's reading of each landmark)
Themes: a pattern the curator sees on many layers (a reading, not a documented connection)
Subject: one topic followed across every layer (the curator's reading of each landmark)
Organisation: everything one maker did, on every layer, with its documented connections
Same months, every layer
or a period of your own

The eleven layers

Select a layer to open it and see everything recorded for it. Read from the bottom up: each layer turns what is beneath it into something the layer above can use. Each has its own clock, and the fast middle is squeezed between slow atoms below and slow institutions above.
